Will Your Job Last Throughout the Recession?

Since the day few leading investment banks tumbled, stock exchanges plunged and the era of recession began, a regular feature of the daily headlines has been lay-off and job cutting news. A lot of companies have been pruning their work force to cut costs. Industries like real estate, finance, electronics, auto-mobile, tourism and luxury goods and services have been worst hit and the number of jobs affected is reach up to several thousands. So, instead of looking for large salary packages, work of interest and other factors, job seekers are just looking for jobs - any kind of jobs so to say.

The question arises that whether this crisis is applicable to every industry, or there are places where people's jobs are safe and where other people can look for jobs as well during these difficult times.

The answer is yes. There are some evergreen job providers which are safe options even when other sectors are finding it tough to sustain. Some of these sectors are traditional that could see through earlier recession periods as well and some are new ones which came into existence recently.

Recession Proof Industries

Medicine and Healthcare - Whatever the market scenario be, people still fall sick, natural disasters do occur and people need to be taken care of. Doctors, physicians, medical experts, nurses and hospital staff are some of the people who will not have to worry about their jobs. Also, medicine and pharmaceutical companies can see through the recession period. There may be some savings by reducing research but production of drugs and medicines will still continue.

Education - Requirement for education will persist consistently at basic and advanced level as well. Perhaps, it can even increase which stiffer competition due to lesser number of jobs. Schools, colleges, universities will continue to operate regularly. Hence, teachers, lecturers, professors can be assured of job security. There can be cases of reduced monetary grants, industry sponsored programs and scholarships, but due to the requirement of improving there qualifications students will still continue to enroll.

Legal Professions - Legal professionals involved in legal and dispute solving activities like personal, property, criminal and company related disputes are regularly being consulted. As fallout of recession cases of bankruptcy, litigations and contracts increase; thereby, increasing business in law/legal department.

Outsourcing/Services Providers - This is one industry that probably is a new one facing the recession. With businesses trying to cut jobs and internal operational costs as well, outsourcing companies and service providers are the first choice which results in these companies sustaining, to say the least, if not prospering.

Food Industry - This is one requirement people can't do away with come whatever may. People will continue eating mostly satisfying basic requirement and some times to satisfy taste buds as well. Therefore, the food industry will continue to operate comfortably; especially the low and medium cost food outlets. The only effected section of this industry will be high value and luxury food providers.

Sales and Marketing - Reduced business during the recession motivates businesses to sell and market even more aggressively. The number of jobs may not increase but will at least remain stable and will require skilled professionals. This will be true for all sales and marketing departments of all the industry sections, so even for severely hit sections sales and marketing will definitely be required.

FMCG - Products catering to basic and daily requirements of people will also continue to be in demand. Products such as toiletries, soap, cosmetics, teeth cleaning products, shaving products and detergents, packaged food products, glassware, paper products and plastic goods are regular usage items for everybody which is going to do business even in recession period. Clothing and garments, though not falling under FMCG, is also a regular usage commodity baring the fashion and luxury versions.

IT and Accounting Services - Basic operational requirements of companies such as IT and accounting services are a persistent requirement. With most of the companies having already incorporated IT systems, these will need to be maintained if not upgraded. This also requires substantial amount of workforce.

Given the current scenario, these industries will definitely bring some respite to people trying to earn their livings. Some of the above industry segments require highly and specifically skilled work force, so every body may be eligible to hope for a job their. But, other industry segments may accommodate people with diverse backgrounds. So, if a professional's current path is not looking promising, he/she can look out for other options as well.
