- Podcast and videocast. Using a webcam, you can record podcasts (just record audio from your cam) or vidcasts that showcase your knowledge.
- Establish a social media presence. Get a Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Ning. Network with other professionals and spread links to your blog.
- Keep your skills sharp. Develop something innovative (like an iPhone app for software developers), or volunteer for a nonprofit. There are many small nonprofits who would love help! If you can find a way to volunteer in a function like your old job (building a website, writing grants, etc), then you've got a winner! Also consider freelancing.
- Teach it. Tutor students or hold workshops to learn what you do. Look up your local adult education project for an application to teach. You probably won't make much - if any - money from it, but your name will be spread.
- Answer questions. Go on LinkedIn Answers, Yahoo Answers and forums to answer questions about your field.
- Get business cards. Don't use your old cards - get new ones with your skills or general title, phone number, and email address. "Jane Smith, Grant Writer, 555-555-5555, jane.smith@email.com". You can list a few skills, too, but this is optional.
- Develop your digital portfolio. If your work is something you can show off, put together a digital portfolio (you can use free hosting site like Yahoo Geocities, if need be - WordPress is a great choice as well.) This will show potential employers what you're about!
