Landman Sales

The most overlooked part of the job of a Landman is the sales aspect. Landmen get focused on all the title aspects of the job and figuring out information about current production and leasehold. They don't focus on and never get any training in the sales side of the job and this is the most important. If you don't know how to sell your company and their services, then all your research won't amount to anything.

Getting a lease signed is the most important part of the Landman's job. Many people argue that title work is, but you can do title work all day of if no lease is signed then your effort is wasted. To get better at the sales aspect of the job, Landmen need to focus on what makes a successful salesman. One of the traits of a successful salesman is product knowledge.

Product knowledge is what sets apart average selling Landmen from above average selling Landmen. All you have to do is know about the lease and its different parts and also be able to answer questions you will get from the Lessor. Many of the questions will be about the lease and also what else is happening in the area. If you can do this part of the job, then you will be ahead of most other Landmen that are employed today.

The best way to get product knowledge is to read as much about the industry and the area you are working and to never stop training.
