The Top 5 Ways to Modify Your Jobs Classifieds Search For a Better Chance at Getting the Job

Many people are in the job market and the competition is fierce. The first place most job seekers go to look for employment is to the jobs classifieds listings or to major job listing boards like Monster. Don't make the mistake of blindly applying for jobs through the classifieds. Read on to find out how you can gain a competitive edge during your job hunt.

1. Nobody knows your name at the classified boards. Thousands upon thousands of job seekers are mass submitting there resumes to job search engines and jobs classified listings in print. This method of seeking a job is highly ineffective because standing out is made difficult and the only angle you are working is your resume.

Instead of going straight to the job board talk first to your family and friends. Put your feelers out and ask if they have heard of job openings or if they are open to asking people in your network. Getting an interview through word of mouth and having a name to drop can give you an edge on your competition.

2. Your background on the company and industry is minimal. Give yourself a boost by researching the company you are going to apply to. Read over the organization or company's websites, talk to employees about working conditions and search employee message boards for insight into their work culture.

3. Tailor your resume to the company and position that you are interested in. Resumes in general are a difficult way to fully express your working potential but you can display interest and motivation. Use your objective or introductory paragraph to zero in on the qualities required by the position and which you respect in the company.

4. Include a professional and polished cover letter with your resume. While not all jobs require a cover letter with resume it is smart to include one. Sending a cover letter gives you a chance to state your qualifications, drop any names or referrals you have gotten and to demonstrate your writing skills. There is much to be desired in an employee who can communicate effectively, professionally and concisely. Be sure to tailor your cover letters specifically for each position you are applying for.

5. Once you've gotten your foot in the door and gone through your interview it's time to send note cards thanking everyone who helped you during the process. Begin with the person who referred you to the job and continue on to anyone that was helpful within the company, like the receptionist on to the person who actually interviewed you. Make sure to get the business cards or correct spellings of each person you anticipate sending a card to during the process. These people will potentially be your coworkers. Showing courtesy early on could win you points and the job.
