How to Get a Oil Rig Welding Job

As more and more production jobs go overseas it is a great time to look for other avenues within your industry. If you are a qualified welder then why not try working on an oil rig. Rig welding jobs pay about $62000 per year on average which is double the average salary of a welding job in the manufacturing industry.

However before you run out and go get one of these jobs here is some valuable background information you may need. Rig welding jobs are considered entry level on an oil rig and there are two main types of welding jobs.

The first you are permanently on the oil rig performing maintance and building any extra frame and metal work. The other type is being a part of a flying squad of welders; you fly in when a big job has to be completed quickly.

Qualified welders are always in demand in the oil industry, the key word being qualified. Before you are hired most likely you will be tested on your skill level and of course being certified can help greatly.

If you work in the U.K some oil companies want their welders to be certified up to "6 GR" by CITB (formerly known as City and Guilds). At this level your welding needs to pass x-ray testing, so it needs to be precise. If you are in the USA you will want to take your test at an accredited AWS facility.

Like the saying goes 'it is not what you know but who you know' can help you get a job in the oil industry. If know anyone working on a rig get them to help you get a job and ask them about the type of work they perform. What material they work with, what processes, positions, etc.

Something you must know is that all oil rig jobs are best suited for single men as many rigs are located in remote areas. Rig workers are quite often away from their friends and families for up to a few weeks at a time. This can be very stressful on a wife/girlfriend or family unless she is very understanding.

Whether you are just starting out or have years of experience RigWorker.com has be helping people get jobs in the oil industry since 1998 and is your best foot in the door.
