Jobs Within the Contract Catering Sector of Hospitality

Contract Caterers or Event Caterers are hospitality companies that supply a food service to businesses or individuals looking to entertain which can be at a specially selected venue or maybe on their own premises. The types of events could be something on at a school, weddings, perhaps a firm entertaining important clients or a even charity fundraising day - the list really is endless.

Contract catering companies provide the setting or sometimes a complete theme plus the food and drink for the event, the overall aim is to satisfy the client on all levels but food really is the true focal point here for these companies. The said food is normally made away from the event site and then finished at the venue - example delicate finishing touches added to desserts or some of the food being reheated. The food/meals provided often range from cold buffets right through to a 7 course tasting "A la Carte" menu but all to a very high standard.

Often there are a lot of people working on each event, depending on the event size and number of people attending it which can mean a hundred or more employees. The contract catering staff are not usually responsible for initially preparing the food but their job is to ensure that the venue has been set up correctly - the food provides a wonderful experience but it is the actual venue with a good theme that gives great appeal and occasion to any event.

Normally contract catering packages are sold on a "per person/head" basis making it much easier to add in for any additional people added at a later date but sometimes one fixed price might be given for the event where strict restrictions are in place on the number of seats available, restrictions for fire and lighting licenses, etc where there is a maximum number of guests allowed at any one time for function.

If it is all done properly, event & contract catering can be a profitable business, for example serving a thousand guests at £40 per head will result in a good, high turnover business. Obviously the food has to be produced at a good price margin as the catering staff wages will use up a big part of the profit to be made. A career in Contact Catering could take you from Downing Street through to working for Royalty where obviously the highest possible standards are expected!
