Keeping track of what patients eat, and what they are permitted to eat, is a very important part of the job. Usually when patients are going into surgery they are not permitted food or drink; and the hospital kitchen staff may be unaware of such doctors' orders, so it is up to them to step in to verify this. They must also keep track of foods which patients might be allergic to or unable to digest. Nurse assistants in lab coats must also give their patients medicine and ensure that the patients actually take it. It can be considered that the responsibilities are as important to patients' well-being as any member of the medical team.

Being a nurse assistant in Dickies scrubs requires less educational certification than nurses in lab coats. However the challenges (and rewards) of nurse assisting in Cherokee scrubs makes nurse assisting a vital part of the hospital staff.
